Start only after Summer Lab
Do this baseline in the week after the Summer Field Guide presentation. It is a sampler, not an exam. Work independently first; an adult may ask “How do you know?” but should not teach during the sample.
Success criteria
- I can solve a mixed sample without hints.
- I can explain one answer with a model, words, or equations.
- I can identify what is secure and what needs one small repair.
Independent practice sample
Calculate 38 × 24.
Calculate 936 ÷ 24.
A book costs HK$12.75 and a pen costs HK$8.50. What is the total cost? Enter the amount in HK dollars and cents.
Which is greater: 3.405 or 3.45?
Line up place values: 3.405 is less than 3.450.
On paper, solve 1/3 + 1/4. Check after you finish: the simplified answer is 7/12.
Explain
Choose the problem that best shows your thinking. Explain why your method works. Record the explanation before anyone corrects it; this is the August writing baseline.
Transfer
A shop receipt says HK$21.25, but someone estimates HK$30. Decide whether the estimate is reasonable and defend your decision. More than one sentence is required; calculation alone is not enough.
Delayed check
Two days later, redo one decimal question and one fraction question with different numbers. “Secure” means correct independently and explained, not remembered from today.
Evidence and next step
Save the explanation at jeremy/portfolio/baseline/baseline-explanation.md (or a photo/scan beside it). Record the lesson links it supports.
- Secure twice plus clear transfer → skip the overlapping anchor and try its application or stretch gate.
- Correct but explanation weak → keep only the explanation task.
- Error reveals a prerequisite gap → repair that gap, then recheck; do not replay a whole course.
