Lesson 1

Parts of a Whole

A fraction shows equal parts of one thing

This is one whole pizza. It hasn't been cut yet.

Now we cut it into 4 equal parts.
Each part is the same size — that's important!

We color 1 part out of 4.
This is the fraction 1/4 — "one quarter".

The top number (numerator) tells you how many parts are colored.
The bottom number (denominator) tells you how many equal parts there are.

Let's color 3 out of 4 parts. That's 3/4 — "three quarters".
The more parts you color, the bigger the fraction!

What if we color all 4 parts? That's 4/4 = 1 whole!
When the numerator equals the denominator, you have the whole thing.

1 / 6
1 4
4
1

The shape is split into 4 equal parts.
1 part is colored. That's 1/4 — one quarter!
