Lesson 2

Fractions as Fair Sharing

A fraction is what each person gets when you share equally

Imagine you have 1 pizza and 4 friends to share with.
How do you share it fairly?

You cut the pizza into 4 equal slices and give one to each person.
Each person gets 1/4 of a pizza.

But what if you have 3 pizzas and 4 friends?
You can't just give whole pizzas — you have to cut and share!

Cut each pizza into 4 slices. That gives you 12 slices total.
Each person gets 3 slices — that's 3/4 of a pizza!

Here's the big idea: sharing 3 pizzas ÷ 4 people = 3/4.
The fraction 3/4 literally means "3 divided by 4"!

This always works: numerator ÷ denominator.
5 ÷ 2 = 5/2 — two whole pizzas plus half more for each person!
