Lesson 3

Fractions on a Number Line

Fractions are numbers — they live between the whole numbers

You already know whole numbers live on a number line.
0, 1, 2, 3... each have their spot.

But what about the spaces between the numbers?
That's where fractions live!

Split the space between 0 and 1 into 2 equal parts.
The middle mark is 1/2.

Split into 4 equal parts.
Now you can see 1/4, 2/4, 3/4. Notice 2/4 is at the same spot as 1/2!

The denominator tells you how many equal jumps from 0 to 1.
The numerator tells you how many jumps to take.

Fractions bigger than 1 go past the 1 mark.
5/4 means 5 quarter-jumps — that lands between 1 and 2!

3/4 — take 3 jumps of size 1/4
